More about Conversations on Culture

A Matter of Habit.
Recorded and performed by Norwegian artist, Moddi.

Lyrics written by Israeli author Alona Kimhi and musician Izhar Ashdot.
English lyrics based on the official translation by Udi Henis.
This song is banned is Israel.

Whether you agree or not with the politics of this song, it's here because it’s such a clear example of how we as people, can be indoctrinated by ‘group think’ culture. I also hear a message of hope in it; not only can we be socialised to make hate, fear and cruelty a matter of habit, but we can also be socialised towards love and being human as a matter of habit.

Conversations on Culture examines the underlying message of the ‘group think’ within our dominant culture today. Terry Real, well known U.S. author and family therapist. says, “Patriarchy’s purpose is for production, consumption and stability.” Our dominant culture is not designed to support human beings, human development or human relationships.

Conversations on Culture explores how socialisation can lead to extreme brutality, methods of control, misuse of power, entitlement and privilege at the cost of human development and wellbeing. This talk enables us to ‘stop and think’ about potential causes behind such human suffering and uncover possible solutions. In my experience, our solutions lie within our collective voice, rather than that of the individual.

Professor of Applied Psychology at New York University, Dr Niobe Way says,
“if we’re in a culture that doesn’t value caring, doesn’t value relationships, doesn’t value empathy, you are going to have boys and girls, men and women go crazy.”
Conversations on Culture prompts us to start a dialogue within our communities about ways we can overcome the devastating impacts of socialisation and create the safety and connection within our communities that support and allow us all to thrive and soar.

Shemewé talks, workshops, groups and events seek to create cultures that are human centred and revolve around the development of self awareness, social conscience, safety, accountability, empathy, connection, authenticity and wellbeing for us as individuals and communities.

Conversations on Culture is the foundation and prerequisite for some of the other Shemewé groups.
